The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is one awesome place to see within Yellowstone. I didn’t spend too much time taking photos here but I did take a couple as I headed down the Red rock trail on the north side of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
Working the trail going in is not terribly difficult, it’s actually paved and even has stairs at some points. Going is not difficult, its the coming out of the the trail thats a little tough, but totally worth it.
Upper Falls in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

To see the falls from the beginning of the trail is magnificent, but I wanted to get to a little better of a view point. So I headed down the Red Rock Trail as mentioned earlier.
Red Rock Trail
Red Rock Trail is a simple walk down hill. Alltrails says it is only 0.6 miles, so it is short and sweet but steep in some spots. While it is steep it is a dirt paved trail and has stairs in some spots. Once you start working your way down to the view point then it is stairs all the way.
Beautiful little spots surround the sides of the trail the whole way down. Take it slow since it is such a short trail. You will notice the subtle and small things like little creeks, and springs coming out of the mountain. You can also get several views of the Yellowstone Canyon along the way.

Along the way hiking down the trail, you can look around and see the walls of the canyon, and see all the amazing stuff the world has to offer to see. Did you know the walls of the canyon are exposed rhyolite lava rock?
The Yellowstone River, like the Colorado River of the Grand Canyon, has carved its way over millions of years through the canyon, to creat what we see today. Its no where near as long or large as the Grand Canyon in Arizona, but they both have their unique beauty that you have to see.

Heading down to the Viewpoint

In the photo above you can see the stairs that you descend down to the viewpoint. The trail ends at the viewpoint, but it is a great half way point to the hike. All you have to do is hike back out, which is a little taxing on the breath, take it easy and enjoy the scenery.

That’s a beautiful waterfall. The staircase reminds me of the “Catwalk” in western New Mexico that winds it’s way up a narrow canyon to waterfalls and a pool. The falls are minuscule compared to Lower Falls, but the walk through the canyon on the catwalk is fun.
Thank you! I havent spent much time in New Mexico, but there is a couple places I would like to explore out that way. Someday I will, and hopefully I can find the catwalk rec area!
